This intersection is a strategic link between Rotorua, Hamilton, Tauranga and Taupo and a popular tourist route with a high portion of heavy traffic.
The construction of the new four-leg roundabout included the realigning of three state highway approaches at SH1/SH5 south of Tirau:
- SH1 North approach, 340m towards Tirau
- SH1 South approach, 300m towards Taupo
- SH5 approach, 520m towards Rotorua
The physical works included:
- Protection of the “Queen’s Tree’s” (two large historic oak trees)
- Co-ordination and liaison for shifting/installing power and telecom services
- Set out of works, site security, information signage, construction survey/setout and calculation of quantities
- Site clearing including the removal and disposal of fences, vegetation, redundant services and obstacles
- Demolition and removal of disused bowling club house and facilities
- Bulk cut to fill and cut to waste
- Construction of Hi-Lab pavement
- Stone mastic asphalt with polymer modified binder surfacing for the roundabout and two-coat chip seal on the approaches and widening
- Drainage and stormwater, including swale drains, subsoil drains, kerb and channel, cesspits and concrete culverts
- Guard railing
- Pavement marking, signage and delineation
- Landscaping and vegetation
