Elliott started at Schick Civil as a labourer in our growing Christchurch branch at the beginning of 2020. Not long after, he was offered an opportunity to move into a Junior Quantity Surveyor role. This was a role that would reconnect him with his tertiary studies, which he completed in 2016, and provide Elliott with the chance to progress his career in the industry. It was an opportunity he took with both hands.
After gaining invaluable experience with the survey team, Elliott’s hard work saw him take another leap forward in his career, becoming a Junior Contract Manager. This meant he was now leading crews to deliver projects across the Canterbury region. “I can’t say I hadn’t thought about taking on a contract manager role at some point. But I didn’t think the opportunity would present itself so soon,” he said.
As a junior contract manager, Elliott is cutting his teeth on smaller projects in the Canterbury region, with the guidance and support of more senior contract managers within Schick. Since building his capability and gaining more experience, Elliott is now taking the lead on more significant projects like the Acland Park residential development. “I really enjoy building relationships and working closely with our crews, other contractors, subcontractors and suppliers to bring a project to life. It’s satisfying to see the transformation of a paddock into a subdivision!”
It’s the focus Schick has on providing people with opportunities to progress that Elliott believes is a point of difference. “If you are willing to work hard and get stuck in, there are always opportunities on offer to grow,” he said. “I think it’s pretty unique for a company to provide people in junior roles with such big opportunities that expose them to working on large scale projects. Schick balances providing both support and freedom really well, and that means I have been able to develop my skills and knowledge rapidly.”
